Minimum Wage
An average person walks in McDonald's and looks up to order only to see there is no dollar menu, but now a $5.00 menu. A McChicken is five dollars, a Big Mac is almost double the current price . Anywhere a hungry citizen may go, every price has increased all because of minimum wage has gone up. Even though increasing the minimum wage would help families with low income jobs, the minimum wage should not be increased because the wage are for low skill jobs, will increase prices, and won’t encourage students going to college.
Increasing minimum wage could be helpful to low-income families. Some families are barely able to live off of their paycheck from their jobs since they work at somewhere like Mcdonalds. Minimum wage currently is $7.65, and if an employee works 40 hours a week every week, that employee would make $15,912 a year which is not very much. Increasing the wage to $15 would increase the yearly wage by a fair amount. What if instead of spending money on increasing minimum wage, they use that money on training people? Spending the money somewhere else is more beneficial, and this will allow citizens to become independent.
First off, minimum wage should not be raised since that wage is for low skill jobs. Jobs that use the minimum wage are jobs that anyone who can work can do. These kind of jobs have little skill a worker would need to train for and increasing the wage for working behind a counter at McDonald's is not right. Instead of spending money to give higher wages to low-experience workers, use that money for a training program. A training program would teach skills needed for higher paying jobs which would give more money to families. Plus, the wage increase will not be the only price that increases.
Increasing the minimum wage will also increase the price of all items or reduce quality. Increasing the wage will force companies to increase their prices so instead of dollar menus at fast food restaurant they be five dollar menus and this affects the whole menu. In contrast, if a company wants to keep close to their price before the raise those companies would have to decrease their quality which means less reliable items that would break easier. It doesn't stop here, students get affected in a different way.
Students may get discouraged to work hard or even get higher education of minimum wage gets increased. As a student myself I know school is not the easiest and know people who have dropped out and work at places like McDonald's. If some students are fine with getting $7.25 or close to that and not going to college how would other feel about more than double that amount. That amount over a year is almost more than some teachers make which takes a degree. If a student got the option for the same amount one you need no schooling so no college loans or a job you need that a lot would pick the simple job. This will make students lose their drive.
In conclusion, yes families need help but keeping the minimum wage from going up would more beneficial to keep prices of products low, keep drive up to go to college and the jobs aren't worth that amount of a wage. My opinion is spending that money on training would be way more worth it to not just those families but for the community and the economy. If you don't want to spend $10 dollars for a fast food burger don't let the minimum wage increase.
